Magnolia West allowed season-high seven runs in Region III-5A Game 1 loss to Lake Creek.
It’s the Lions’ second trip ever to the fifth round and the victory was the first for them. They were swept at this juncture a year ago by Friendswood.“We out-hit them and we had one bad inning,” Magnolia West coach Travis Earles said. “We had one uncharacteristic error defensively that kind of opened up and then they had more two-out hits than we did. When it comes down to this time of the season, two-out hits will win or lose baseball games.
Lake Creek senior Ethan Uribe then stepped to the plate against Magnolia West ace James Ellwanger in the top of the second and lofted a towering solo homer over the left field wall. Two batters later, James Kennedy deflected a ball off Ellwanger to bring home another run on an infield single and Blake Brown took the first pitch he saw up the middle for an RBI single.
“Ethan Uribe and Sam Lee, I think they’ve probably played in every playoff game in our school history,” Schramm said. “Uribe has come up clutch. got the one run and the home run kind of locked it all up. We got a couple guys and we got hits. Sam Lee drove one in the gap and that was a big hit. Brown before that had a big hit.”
