Big Bang Theory producer reveals there was no plan for Leonard’s relationship with Priya. 'We were just desperate to find the next episode and that was it. And if something grew out of that, great.'
The Big Bang Theory producer Steve Molaro opens up about Leonard's most polarizing love interest which happens to be Raj's sister, Priya. Over the years, the nerd-centric sitcom also tackled various romantic relationships on top of its mostly collective narratives. While it was clear from the get-go that The Big Bang Theory was setting up Penny and Leonard to be endgame, that didn't stop CBS from partnering them up with other love interests.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Officially introduced in The Big Bang Theory season 4, Leonard began a romantic relationship with Priya which lasted for a while despite Raj's opposition. The pair even tried to do a long-distance set-up, but eventually decided to break things off once they both realized that their affair had no long-term potential. Ultimately, Leonard reconciled with Kaley Cuoco's character, Penny which was always a fan-favorite pairing.
Uh, talk about a polarizing character. I wish I could tell you we thought about these things in advance like that; we didn’t. It seemed like a fun storyline that Leonard’s been dating Koothrappali’s sister. That was as much as that moment had. It was never, “Ooh, if Leonard was dating Koothrappali’s sister, then we’ll do X episode and Y episode!” That’s not how we did it. We were just desperate to find the next episode and that was it. And if something grew out of that, great.
Leonard and Priya's romantic relationship was never meant to last, the same way that his affair with Leslie wasn't also going anywhere. The Big Bang Theory wrote out Leslie despite previously making Sara Gilbert a series regular because viewers of the nerd-centric sitcom were already so invested in his story with Penny. This meant that in order to keep audiences' interest and not turn them off, they needed to put ample focus on Leonard and Penny's arc.
Sadly, after dealing with their tumultuous dating history, The Big Bang Theory ultimately wasted Leonard and Penny. Once they were married, the sitcom cast them aside and stagnated their collective arcs for years. This is proven by their poorly-executed ending where Penny was revealed to be pregnant despite being adamant that she didn't want to have kids.
