US President Joe Biden speaks in the East Room of the White House in Washington, D, on June 4, 2024 to announce he will temporarily shut the US-Mexico border to asylum seekers whenever illegal migrant crossings surge. - The 81-year-old Democrat is signing a long-awaited executive order that would ban migrants who enter illegally from getting asylum when numbers top 2,500 in a day, as well as making it easier to deport them back to Mexico.
Biden’s executive order bars migrants who enter the US illegally from claiming asylum when numbers surge past 2,500 in a day — a threshold that has already been passed. It also makes it easier to deport people back to Mexico.Biden came under fire from all sides for the policy shift, which uses the same law that Trump once employed to ban migrants from Muslim countries when he was president.
Under Biden, illegal crossings of the 1,900-mile border have surged to record levels, rising to a monthly peak of around 300,000 — 10,000 a day — in December. Migrant numbers have fallen considerably in recent months, to some 179,000 in April, but polls show it is still one of Biden’s biggest electoral liabilities.
