In a statement marking the eleventh anniversary of the creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, Biden claimed that the Obama-era initiative has offered education and labor protections to more than 800,000 people who entered the country illegally as children, and called on Congress to pass legislation extending citizenship to Dreamers."Dreamers are Americans. Many have spent the majority of their lives in the United States.
The president specifically noted that the first version of the Dream Act was introduced by former Sen. Orrin Hatch and Sen. Dick Durbin . He also claimed that the legislation"has been championed by bipartisan coalitions of lawmakers, business and educational leaders and organizations, and the overwhelming majority of the American public.
"While Vice President Harris and I will continue fighting to pass legislation to protect Dreamers and create a path to citizenship, only Congress can provide permanent and lasting stability for these young people and their families," Biden concluded."Congress must act to protect our Dreamers."The president's immigration policy will be hotly debated throughout the 2024 presidential campaign cycle.
Republicans have long claimed that the Biden administration weakened border protections put in place by his predecessor, and are currently teeing up an impeachment vote for Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
