What is the Vulcan disease Bendii Syndrome?
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Lieutenant T'Lyn referenced Bendii Syndrome in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 5, but what is this rare disorder that led to the death of Ambassador Sarek ? Vulcans have a few diseases and disorders specific to their species, one of which is the rare degenerative neurological illness Bendii Syndrome.
In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3, episode 23, "Sarek," Spock's father Ambassador Sarek visits the USS Enterprise-D. When the crew of the Enterprise begin experiencing strange outbursts of emotion, Dr. Beverly Crusher comes to the conclusion that Sarek must have Bendii Syndrome. Sarek had also been uncharacteristically emotional since arriving on the Enterprise, even crying at a musical performance.
Sarek later passed away at the age of 203, after struggling with the effects of Bendii Syndrome for two years. Sarek was old even for a Vulcan, so it's likely his death was a result of both Bendii Syndrome and advanced age. There are so few cases of Bendii Syndrome among Vulcans, that some consider it to be merely a folktale. Perhaps because of this, not much is known about this disease, especially among humans, but it appears that cases can vary in severity from person to person.
Does Lower Decks' T’Lyn Have Bendi Syndrome Like Spock’s Father Sarek? Despite being only 62 years old, Star Trek's newest Vulcan Lt. T'Lyn believes that she may have come down with Bendii Syndrome in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 5, "Empathological Fallacies." Soon after three Betazoid diplomats arrive on the USS Cerritos, the crew begins experiencing uncharacteristic outbursts of emotion. Captain Carol Freeman and her daughter, Lt.
T'Lyn's emotions come to a head when she grows increasingly frustrated that she cannot send a message to her former captain. When she realizes that she has been broadcasting her emotions to everyone on the ship, she comes to the conclusion that she must have Bendii Syndrome. While this would be unusual considering her age, it is apparently not out of the realm of possibility.
