Mary Gabriel’s new biography, “Madonna: A Rebel Life,” celebrates the seismic influence of the boundary-breaking artist
Madonna Ciccone did not look back.
This forbidding task is a fitting one for Gabriel, who has chronicled the lives of boundary-breaking women before in previous books like “Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art” and the Pulitzer-nominated “Love and Capital,” about Karl Marx’s marriage. As such, she is well-positioned to dig into the radical makings of Madonna.
It is harrowingly early in this titanic biography that Madonna begins to lose many of her closest friends and collaborators to AIDS. Among them were her first dance teacher and mentor, Christopher Flynn, whose classes in suburban Michigan helped a teenage Madonna realize “I could turn myself into something else.” In the total absence of governmental action, Madonna forged her own crusade. She distributed AIDS awareness brochures at her concerts a year before the government produced its own.
