Brief yet intense thunderstorms were predicted to pop up around the Bay Area on Wednesday, leaving the region with yet another day with rain in the forecast.
These scattered storms could appear anywhere from the Central Coast around Big Sur to well into Wine Country, past Santa Rosa. The entirety of the Bay Area could see these storms, according to the NWS.
“I wouldn’t call it unpredictable. It is going to be one of those days, though, that somebody in your neighborhood might not get as much rain as you do because these are going to be fairly spotty,” Murdock said. “But as far as the general pattern goes, we’re in it and we’re prepared for it.” The NWS predicted between two-tenths and one-half of an inch of the rain for most urban parts of the Bay Area, including San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland and Walnut Creek, but these areas could exceed expectations if they’re hit by an over-performing thunderstorm.
According to the NWS, these storms could last through the day Wednesday, though virtually all precipitation was expected to cease by the early hours of Thursday, leading to a few days of dryness heading into the weekend. According to Murdock, it was too early to predict when more storms could come, though it’s possible another atmospheric river could arrive as soon as Monday.
Missing from Thursday’s storms, however, could be the strong winds that Bay Area residents have come to expect with the rainy weather. Winds are still expected to be strong with more than 20 mile per hour gusts, but likely not enough to cause damage like in previous storms.
