Charles Goetting, 33, pleaded no contest to murdering 40-year-old Colin Anderson, after a split verdict at his 2021 trial.

OAKLAND — After a split verdict where jurors convicted him of attempting to kill BART cops but couldn’t reach a verdict on the murder count, a Bay Area man admitted to murdering his friend and received a life sentence last year, court records show.

The sentence was handed down last summer, but has not been previously reported. The latest development: last week, a judge set the schedule for the First District Appellate Court to review Goetting’s attempted murder convictions. That process will likely take years, court records show. Anderson’s body was later found in the truck, which prosecutors argued at Goetting’s 2021 trial explained both why Goetting fired at police and proved he had a guilty conscience about murdering Anderson. The defense argued that Goetting shot Anderson in self-defense during an argument where Anderson threatened him with a fake gun.

“We had to listen to Charles sit in the courtroom under oath and spin these elaborate lies about who Jason was. He was certainly no best friend to my brother as he portrayed,” Norman said, according to the transcript. She later added, “He even had the audacity to claim that was a murderer and that he would hurt people. My family and I know as well as he does that that is just not the truth.”
