Zhi Neng, Huang, 49, of San Francisco was fishing with another man who said his friend seemingly was in a squatting position baiting his hook when he was hit by a wave.
At about noon Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a water rescue in the Jade Cove area of Big Sur. Rainy weather was making its way through the region when the incident occurred and the California Highway Patrol’s H70 helicopter was temporarily grounded and unable to respond. Other agencies, including California State Parks, Big Sur Fire, U.S. Forest Service, the Sheriff’s Office, and Coast Guard, responded to the call.
By the time a State Parks lifeguard reached the man, he had died. At about 1:50 p.m., the Coast Guard helicopter began hoist operations to retrieve the body.
