UC Berkeley researchers find region is on 'right track' for lofty climate targets

The Bay Area’s aggressive adoption of electric vehicles has led to a significant drop in carbon emissions across the region, according to a UC Berkeley study released Thursday.

Cohen said that in order to reach the state’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2045, there needs to be a 3.7% yearly decrease in carbon emissions each year. He touted that 1.8% is a “big chunk” of what’s necessary. Roughly 28,000 registered vehicles in The City are electric, accounting for 6.6% of all registered vehicles, according to 2022 state data. Last year, electric-vehicle sales encompassed 37% of all new vehicle sales in San Francisco, four times higher than any other U.S. county, according to the San Francisco Environment Department.

The City hopes to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 — five years earlier than the statewide target — and have at least 25% of The City’s registered vehicles be electric by 2030. It aims to ban the sale of gas-powered cars entirely by 2035.
