Back in 1990, people all across America were doing the Bartman.
When"The Simpsons" debuted back in 1989, the show's playful animation and crude humor made it breakout success. A soundtrack released the following year featuring"Do the Bartman," a catchy New Jack Swing track with backing vocals from Michael Jackson, further cemented"The Simpsons" grip on pop culture.
But one person who wasn't interested in doing the Bartman was longtime BART agency spokesperson Michael C. Healy. In his 2016 book,"," Healy describes how the producers of"The Simpsons" reached out to him just before the show launched in December 1989 to propose a tie-in. "The idea sounded intriguing, until I received a copy of the show's playbook and a guide with illustrations of the characters. ... Bart Simpson was characterized as an underachieving brat. I did not think BART should be associated with such a character, and so rejected the overture from the producers," he wrote.
In addition to not appreciating BART's eat-my-shorts attitude, Healy didn't think the show would have much longevity at all — he predicted the series would last only one season. Now after nearly 23 years on air,"The Simpsons" has claimed a slew of superlatives, including the title of longest running American scripted primetime television series.
