As a parent, I want my children to have healthy relationships with their bodies. I want my children to have access to safe and appropriate health information.

Late elementary through early high school is the time when kids experience the most change. As they go through puberty, their understanding of themselves and their peers is changing and growing as they experience their bodies changing and start thinking more independently. This time can be confusing, it can be challenging, and it can often feel isolating, especially as some kids are beginning to think about how their bodies work, as well as their sexuality and gender identity.

When children go through puberty, whether they are comfortable in their assigned gender roles or realizing they may be gay or transgender or questioning, it’s an adult’s job to support and uplift them rather than shame and dismiss their questions and concerns. When all the books with information they are looking for have been banned, where do kids turn to get answers to questions they may feel embarrassed to ask adults? The internet and misinformed peers.

As a parent, I would rather my child turn to me for answers or go to the library where books are vetted systematically by an educated community. I regularly have conversations with my children about what they learned in sex ed at school and how it made them feel. As parents, it is our responsibility to monitor our children’s intake of this information.
