Share to twitterIt has now been nearly half a century—47 years, to be exact—since Americans last walked on the Moon. The Trump Administration wants to return there, and this year it accelerated the timetable for a manned lunar landing from 2028 to 2024. A big increase in funding will be required to meet the earlier deadline.

The Trump Administration’s program to return to the Moon, dubbed Artemis after the twin sister of Apollo, will be assembled partly with hardware developed for the Bush effort. But judging from the websites of the leading Democratic presidential candidates, that plan might not come to fruition if one of them wins the White House in 2020.

Florida is where Apollo launched for every one of its Moon missions. It is where the Space Shuttle launched, and after the Shuttle was retired, the processing of cargo and hardware for the International Space Station continued to be accomplished in Florida at the Kennedy Space Center. It is where future manned missions to the Moon will originate, and any that go on to Mars .

In 2012, Obama carried the nation’s third most populous state by a mere 75,000 votes. Trump won it by 120,000 votes in 2016—out of over nine million votes cast in the state. More recently, the state’s junior U.S. Senator won his race by a mere 10,000 votes, while its governor won by 32,000 votes .
