Joining the ACC represents much more than sports, writes R. Gerald Turner. In the years ahead, SMU will be developing meaningful academic partnerships with other top-ranked universities in the ACC.
Typically this is because the truly remarkable event has occurred over a time period measured by years — versus weeks or months.
Therefore, joining the ACC represents much more than sports. In the years ahead, SMU will be developing meaningful academic partnerships with other top-ranked universities in the ACC — such as Duke, Stanford, the University of Virginia, UC Berkeley, Boston College, the University of North Carolina and Wake Forest, to name a few. This will continue to elevate SMU’s visibility and prestige on both a national and international basis.
However, SMU’s athletic future is also very bright — as it will bring Dallas great athletic competition from the powerhouse teams of other great universities. As SMU Board Chair David Miller said, “We’re finally back where we belong.” Every great city has a great university. SMU has pledged to be that university for Dallas, and building upon its academic reputation, while also building its athletic programs, delivers on that promise every day. The “Triple D” logo of the city of Dallas proudly displayed on Mustang uniforms is not a marketing ploy — rather, it represents who SMU is today.
