Why not take the money our state loses with this gimmicky policy and give it to the people who actually need it, in the form of a tax credit?
In the words of Assembly Republican Leader John DiMaio, “When you can’t afford living in New Jersey, this short holiday on notebooks and pencils is meaningless.” It’s just about back-to-school time, and Gov. Phil Murphy and other Democratic state leaders are showing their love for New Jersey families by offering this special giveaway: 20 cents in sales tax savings off a $3 notebook. Or 13 cents off $2 box of pencils.
New Jersey’s sales tax holiday on school supplies lasts a little over a week, from late August through early September, and was pitched as a “direct attack on inflation” by Senate President Nicholas Scutari when it got enacted last year. It’s something to “help make New Jersey more affordable,” Gov. Murphy said.
