Former starting quarterback Burmeister, coming out of concussion protocol, worked with wideouts during Monday afternoon's practice
San Diego State’s quarterback situation took another unusual turn during Monday afternoon’s practice.Jalen Mayden, the quarterback-turned-safety-turned-quarterback practiced with the first unit, all but answering SDSU’s starting QB question heading into Saturday night’s Mountain West game at Nevada.That seemed straight forward enough. Expected even, after Mayden had a breakout game two weeks ago in his return to quarterback in place of injured starter Braxton Burmeister.
Burmeister was an active participant again Monday, but it was true freshman Liu Aumavae working with the second unit.Though he was wearing a green quarterbacks jersey with his familiar No. 5 when he walked onto the practice field, Burmeister didn’t immediately make his way to the grass field to join the quarterbacks group.
He also caught a long sideline pass between two defenders during the portion of practice open to the media .SDSU head coach Brady Hoke was not available for comment after practice, so questions about Burmeister’s role will have to wait until Hoke’s midday Tuesday press conference at the Fowler Athletics Center.
Mayden got a leg up on the QB competition because he was able to practice all last week — workouts were limited to three days during the off week as coaches headed out to recruit — while Burmeister missed almost everything while under concussion protocol.
