Ayashimon's Urara is proving to be way more interesting than protagonist Maruo, prompting fan discussion of when it's better for shonen stories to buck trends and reject cliches in favor of telling more compelling stories.
Ayashimon's shift from the main protagonist and human Maruo to his yakuza boss and yokai Urara proves that shonen manga should abandon the stereotypical hero type who seeks out stronger opponents.
Before chapter 10 by Yuji Kaku, Ayashimon focused primarily on Maruo who wants more than to be just like his favorite manga characters. The particular experience he's so adamant about emulating is a key trope in shonen manga. Maruo doesn't just yearn strength and power. He wants an opponent to beat him up so badly to the point where he doesn't think he'll win so that he'll have the chance to push himself back to his feet regardless.
The fact that Urara's own darker story, the extent of which has only been explored in one chapter, already overshadows everything Maruo has experienced over the last nine installments underscores the stagnancy of the typical shonen hero. Maruo is basically the personification of this stereotype through his ongoing quest to become that exact type of hero, and how he pursues this dream follows the same formula.
It's also crucial to point out that Ayashimon made it clear early on that Maruo was a reimagined version of Saitama from One-Punch Man, which is notorious for its satirical take on the shonen genre. Ironically, Ayashimon abandoned that captivating hook, which has been keeping One-Punch Man alive all this time - the hope that Saitama will finally find an opponent that will require him to punch them more than once to win. Maruo has already experienced his own version of this.
