We chat with TheLittleMermaid stars Awkwafina and JacobTremblay about their wildest improv and working with Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda during the recording process:
In The Little Mermaid, a live-action adaptation of the 1989 animated Disney classic, Ariel is the youngest daughter of King Triton and enamored by the forbidden human world. When she breaks her father's rules and visits the surface world, she meets and falls for Prince Eric. King Triton angrily confronts Ariel, which leads her to make a deal with the sea witch Ursula.
Awkwafina: I saw it for the first time the other night, and I was genuinely surprised by some of the things that Scuttle says. I think she turns around at one point just she's like, "Yas!" I remember doing that. I did not think that would ever be used.Awkwafina: Exactly! I couldn't believe that. And then I had this whole, that wasn't used, this whole other narrative where Sebastian and I would bicker. I feel like we were married at some point.
Awkwafina: I mean, that was such a crazy experience. I definitely had an out of body moment when I found myself in the room at a piano with both of them talking and actively writing. It was just such a crazy thing to witness. It's such a beloved institution, I guess, for everybody. So it's moments like that just to be a part of it, to be close to it. So cool.
Now you've done Raya and the Last Dragon, you've also done this live-action adaptation, and you're in the MCU. The only Disney thing left to conquer is Star Wars. What are the chances that we see you in Star Wars eventually, or do you think we'll get a live-action Raya and the Last Dragon first?
