We speak to AvatarTheWayofWater production designer Ben Procter about tapping into both reality and fantasy while building Pandora, and the latest updates on Avatar3:
Picking up over a decade after the events of Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water follows Jake, Neytiri, and the next generation of the Sully family. The familiar threat of humans returning uproots the peaceful life they have created and puts a target on their backs. The Sullys must seek refuge with the Metkayina, but Quaritch and the Sky People continue to hunt for the Sully family leading them to stand and fight to protect their new home and those whole have helped them.
So we've got these two flavors and each one of them needs to be approached with a full throated respect for reality and what would it really be like.
I think a lot of people, even today, after so many years since Avatar 1, and with all of the different materials that we have out there on how the movie's made, I still think a lot of people miss the story of how we approach this and how the movies are made.
Ben Procter: Essentially we need to figure out the layout of the world both on the micro and the macro, we have scenes where characters have to leap across parts of a 400-foot-long ship to achieve a certain eye line, to sneak up on a certain set of people that they're trying to rescue and all that kind of stuff.
Ben Procter: Absolutely.
Ben Procter: Of course. I mean, look, the RDA was super impressive in the first film, but as General Ardmore says in Avatar 2 where, "it's not a mining operation colonel, this is a full colonizing effort." So the new base, which is called Bridgehead, it needed to convey immediately that it's on a scale that is completely beyond what we saw in Avatar 1.
