The Avalanche’s first-round draft pick from Sweden may have been the standout name, but it was a stressful ordeal for him without previous exposure to English.Bowers was an oxymoron by then: a veteran rookie. The No. 28 overall draft pick by Ottawa in 2017, acquired by Colorado in the Matt Duchene trade that year, he had been through his share of rookie camps.
A year later, Bowers is still awaiting his NHL chance. The forward’s career has been ravaged by injuries and the pandemic, but the 23-year-old is off to maybe his best AHL start. With increased defensive reliability as his emphasis, he still tallied six points in the first seven games. Ask him how he feels about the season so far, and he’ll point out the Eagles’ losing record first. Still, he understands the importance of his individual performance after. Bowers is the only first-round pick from the 2017 draft class who has not played in the NHL.
