Authorities arrest boy, 17, suspected in attempted rape in Lincoln Acres [Breaking]
A 17-year-old boy was in custody Thursday night on suspicion that he tackled and attempted to sexually assault a 16-year-old girl last month in the Lincoln Acres community near National City, sheriff’s officials said.and released several videos and photographs of the suspect in the attack. Officials said the boy surrendered to authorities Thursday evening after detectives with the department’s sexual assault unit had identified him as the suspect.
Because the suspect is not an adult, sheriff’s officials withheld his name, but said he was in custody at the Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility on suspicion of felony charges of robbery, kidnapping to commit rape or robbery, assault with intent to commit rape and assault by means likely to cause injury.
The attack occurred around 3 p.m. on July 26, a Tuesday, as the girl was walking along Prospect Street near Sweetwater Road near National City, San Diego sheriff’s Lt. Kevin Ralph, from the sexual assault unit, wrote in a news release. Authorities said the suspect tackled the girl, who fought him off and ran away before the suspect tackled her a second time, Ralph said. A good Samaritan who witnessed the attack intervened, which caused the attacker to run away, taking with him the victim’s cellphone. The girl sustained minor injuries.Sheriff’s officials did not say how they identified the suspect, but thanked community members for phoning in anonymous tips to San Diego County Crime Stoppers.
Ralph said members of the San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force worked with the suspect’s family to arrange a meeting location where the boy could turn himself in, and he did so around 5 p.m. Thursday in San Diego’s Mission Valley neighborhood.
