The money is from the state's Strong Communities Program.
The Aurora City Council this week accepted a grant from the state to tear down some residential properties throughout town. Aldermen approved getting a $487,000 grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority, or IHDA, for maintaining and demolishing abandoned and blighted properties. The money comes from the agency’s Strong Communities Program. Through the years, Aurora has had a policy of tearing down abandoned residential properties that become problems in neighborhoods.
The grant will allow the city to identify and tear down more properties. Alex Alexandrou, the city’s chief management officer, said the city had already identified properties it has been unable to take care of due to the cost. “We’re thankful to get this funded to this level,” he said. “We feel like it’s a good program.” The Strong Communities Program leverages federal Hardest Hit Funds and National Foreclosure Settlement Funds.
