The Aurora City Council appears ready to approve more than $1 million in Quality of Life grants on Tuesday night for social service agencies in the city.
City Council members, meeting as a Committee of the Whole, had no comment after reviewing the grants on Feb. 7. They are given out to social service agencies once a year, funded mostly be gaming tax revenue from Hollywood Casino - Aurora.Quality of Life grants are given to organizations that provide for Aurora citizens in the areas of basic needs, community, education and youth, mental health, museums and services for seniors.
In the category of education and youth, the grants proposed are $15,000 to the African American Men of Unity for Jobs for Youth Internship Program and Rites of Passage Mentoring Program; $11,500 for Agape for the Sankofa Saturday School of History, Culture and Creativity; $11,500 to the Alive Center for a Teen Initiated Drop-in Program; and $3,000 to Aurora Starz for 2023 Aurora Starz teams.
In the category of mental health, the grants proposed are $5,000 to Changing Children’s World for The Best Start for Aurora Families program; $10,000 to Fox Valley Hands of Hope for its community grief counseling; $10,000 to the Judah Robinson Foundation for its Homeless Mental Health Intervention; and $15,000 to NAMI of Kane, DeKalb and Kendall for programs to remove barriers and meet the service gap of mental health services.
