NASA topped the charts as the best large agency to work for in the federal government in 2019, a spot it’s held for eight years running.

NASA has also benefited from a surge in attention from the White House. President Donald Trump mandated that NASA speed up the next human moon landing by four years to 2024 and has also prioritized the establishment of a new Space Force as a sixth branch of the armed forces.

One factor that appears to affect employee morale at NASA is that most of the agency’s employees work well out of range of the capital’s political firefights; just 1,000 of the agency’s 17,500 employees work at headquarters in Washington, D.C. Some of the agency’s highest scores for employee engagement are at its research facilities and launch ranges: Kennedy Space Center on Florida’s space coast has the highest morale in the agency, with a score of 86.4, up 2.2 points from 2018.

The only category that decreased at NASA was employees’ perception of the agency’s support for diversity, which went down 0.2 points. NASA officials frequently talk about the need to diversify its workforce, especially to bring more women into the male-dominant organization. About one-third of NASA’s workforce are women, but, when looking at only more senior, science-focused jobs, that number drops to just 16 percent, according toby the agency.
