The bacteria that causes meningococcal disease spreads through close and prolonged contact, via activities like kissing.
it's important to start treatment as soon as possible if you begin experiencing symptoms, as treatment with antibiotics can reduce the likelihood of death. Other treatment may include breathing support, medications to help low blood pressure, and surgery to remove dead tissue.
Meningococcal disease is also preventable with two vaccines: Meningococcal conjugate and Serogroup B meningococcal . In light of the current outbreak, the CDC recommends that"gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men get a meningococcal vaccine if they live in Florida, or talk with their healthcare provider about getting vaccinated if they are traveling to Florida." The organization also noted that people with HIV should get routine meningococcal vaccinations.
"Getting vaccinated against meningococcal disease is the best way to prevent this serious illness, which can quickly become deadly," says José R. Romero, MD, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, in the CDC press release.
