Traditional Dogon hunters blamed for killing at least 110 Fulani herders in central Mali
The violence is fueled by accusations of grazing cattle on Dogon land and disputes over access to land and water, but the area is also troubled by militant influence.
The assaults on the villages of Ogossagou and Welingara took place as a UN Security Council mission visited Mali to try to find solutions to violence that killed hundreds of civilians last year and is spreading across West Africa's Sahel region. "The body count continues by the gendarmes, who have just told me they have found 110 bodies, but the count continues," Guindo told Reuters news agency by telephone from Ogossagou.
The conflict was just the latest in a series of clashes between the Dogon and the Fulani –– the English term for Peulh communities that have left dozens dead in recent months. The violence is fueled by accusations of grazing cattle on Dogon land and disputes over access to land and water, but the area is also troubled by militant influence.
