A powerful earthquake has struck Morocco, and shaking was felt from Rabat to Marrakesh. There is no immediate word on any casualties or damage. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 and occurred about 18 kilometers below the surface. It says the quake hit at 11:11 p.m. Friday and was centered about 56.3 kilometers west of Oukaimeden, a popular ski resort in the Atlas Mountains.
A powerful earthquake struck Morocco late Friday, killing at least 100 people, damaging buildings in major cities and sending panicked people pouring into streets and alleyways from the capital Rabat to Marrakech, the county's most visited tourist destination., but the number of deceased was expected to rise as officials began surveying the widespread damage.
Moroccans posted videos showing buildings reduced to rubble and dust and parts of the famous red walls that surround the old city in historic Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, damaged. Tourists and others posted videos of people screaming and evacuating restaurants in the city as throbbing club music played.
Rather than return to concrete buildings, men, women and children stayed out in the streets worried about aftershocks and other reverberations that could cause their homes to sway. Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly
