Astros' Lance McCullers Jr. threw another bullpen session on Saturday in Chicago.
CHICAGO — Astros righthander Lance McCullers Jr. threw another bullpen session on Saturday in Chicago, his fourth time throwing off the mound while he rehabs a forearm strain that has sidelined him all season.
McCullers said he threw about 35 pitches on Saturday, mixing in changeups, sinkers and four-seam fastballs. His velocity clocked in between 89-91 mph. He plans to throw cutters off the mound on Tuesday when the Astros return to Houston for a six-game homestand. McCullers said he will continue to throw off-speed pitches on flat ground for now, and estimated he might be able to take those to the mound next weekend.
Astros manager Dusty Baker said he didn’t have any more clarity on a timeline for when McCullers might proceed to live batting practice sessions, ostensibly the next step in his rehab before a minor-league rehab assignment. “He's throwing fastball, changeups and then spinning some, throwing all his pitches at different points of time to see how the progression works and see how his arm feels,” Baker said. “So he's on course. Not sure exactly when, but we just hope he doesn't have any setbacks that would take him backwards.”
