SEATTLE — Two notable injured Astros took another step in their rehab work Saturday.
Jose Altuve, out all season after having surgery to repair a fractured right thumb, took some swings during batting practice on his 33rd birthday. Meanwhile, righthander Lance McCullers Jr., sidelined with a forearm strain, threw a bullpen session before the second game of Houston’s series at T-Mobile Park.three of the previous four days but his batting practice appearance came as somewhat of a surprise. He had just been cleared Monday to resume limited baseball activities.
When Altuve had surgery March 22, general manager Dana Brown said he wouldn’t resume baseball activities for at least two months. McCullers didn’t speak to media Saturday but said through a team spokesman that he “felt like it went good” and hit 90 mph twice. “He looked good – he looked real good,” manager Dusty Baker said. “He seemed pleased. He was throwing the ball free and easy. He was very good.”
