Detroit Tigers Miguel Cabrera receives a bottle of wine from Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker Jr. as he was honored by the Astros before the start of an MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 in Houston.
The man regarded as one of the game’s best hitters and a Venezuelan icon doffed his new hat to the crowd atop the dugout steps in Houston, one of the first stops on his season-long farewell tour.Altuve hails from the same Venezuelan hometown as Cabrera in Maracay, and like many in the country grew up idolizing Cabrera, who debuted in the major leagues four years before Altuve signed his first contract with Houston.
“His mentality, he always has one routine and he simplifies this routine in order to create a good habit from a mental standpoint and not overthink,” said López. “He's just trying to be on time and put the barrel on the ball. He's got a god's gift in terms of sequence, tendencies, like not everybody had. That's why he's been really good all his career.”
“Working with Miggy the last probably six months in the WBC gave me a better perspective on what type of person he is: Humble,” López said. “I haven't seen a guy that loves this game more than this guy. He loves his country. He loves the game. And he has so much passion that it was contagious being around him. I was able to be the co-leader that people were talking about and I was able to prove it. I'm just glad that I was part of it.
