He is a constant inside one of baseball’s most consistent bullpens, a group given minuscule margins for error almost every time it is called upon.
None prepared the battery for the brutal conditions that followed. Shadows covered the pitcher’s mound and home plate. Rays from the late afternoon sun bounced off some center-field suites and back behind the plate, producing a glare Maldonado could not overcome. Reduced visibility turned the 10th inning into a total disaster. Maldonado did not catch two of Stanek’s elevated fastballs during his 23-pitch frame. Both were ruled wild pitches against Stanek, who threw four of those total in 54 ⅔ innings last season.
“It was hard to see all game, anything up in the strike zone, but I should have caught those pitches anyway,” Maldonado said after“At the end of the day, we get paid for this and we have to find a way. We didn’t find a way today. We had a chance to win the game today and I it up. Should have those two fastballs.”
