The Astros gave Mauricio Dubón the day off for the series finale against the Phillies on Sunday, two days afterDubón slashed .302/.327/.385 while playing in 23 of Houston’s first 28 games and made all of his starts at second base in place of the injured Jose Altuve. Prior to Sunday, Dubón had played in 18 consecutive games.
With Dubón off, the Astros moved Jeremy Peña up one spot in the batting order to hit leadoff, and gave Rylan Bannon his first start at second base. Bannon had played just one other game, starting at designated hitter on Friday against the Phillies, since he was called up from Class AAA Sugar Land on April 18 to take outfielder Chas McCormick’s roster spot.
Baker had no update on second baseman Jose Altuve, who has not yet resumed baseball activities since his thumb surgery in late March. The Astros initially estimated Altuve would need two months to recover before resuming baseball activities, much less playing in minor-league rehab games. At-bats have been difficult to come by for backup catchers Yainer Diaz and César Salazar, which Baker blamed on the frequent off days in the Astros’ schedule and on pitchers’ level of comfort with starting catcher Martín Maldonado. Baker also said Diaz has been chasing too much at the plate.
