Houston will announce Yordan Alvarez’s $115 million contract extension on Monday. Sunday’s showing makes the sum seem like a bargain.

The Kansas City Royals' Salvador Perez celebrates his two-run home run with teammate Bobby Witt Jr. during the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Houston Astros, Sunday, June 5, 2022, in Kansas City, Mo. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The baseball arrived at a place only Yordan Alvarez can put it, onto a deck beneath a bar amid a sea of empty royal blue seats. His home runs routinely render spectators silent. Teammates turn to one another in awe.

“It’s cool to watch. I’m closer than in the dugout,” Tucker said. “But watching him just, in general, is a lot of fun. He doesn’t get out of the strike zone too much, barrels a lot of balls, so it’s really fun just to watch in general.”Alvarez added a triple and sharp single, sending his OPS to 1.015. Tucker reached four times total, turning around the 8-for-40 funk with which he entered.

Yuli Gurriel, the man most often batting between Alvarez and Tucker, finished Sunday’s game 1-for-4. His batting average stands at .225, a stunning number for someone one season removed from the American League batting title. Gurriel has taken one more at-bat with runners on base this season than Tucker.
