As a regular at MLBPA camp in Arizona, Austin Slater became a de facto voice of the players during MLB’s lockout.
MESA, Ariz. — After wrapping up his latest workout at the training site provided by the MLB Players Association during the lockout, Giants outfielder Austin Slater went home to the house he is renting here and helped ensure it would be his last trip to the facility.
“It was a learning experience for myself. It was eye opening to see the lid pulled off of the economics and all that goes into bargaining. But I’d say overall it’s been a really positive process to be a part of.” Amid the flurry of developments over the past few weeks, union reps have become the rare, reliable source of information for many players. Each team has one, elected every two years via secret ballot. Before Slater, Brandon Crawford, Cory Gearrin and Matt Cain served the role.
“Slater’s been great,” said Hoerner, who also attended Oakland’s Head-Royce High. “It’s my first time going through anything like this, too, so I’m learning on the fly as well.”
