As ex-Southern Baptist figure alleges ‘criminal conspiracy,’ prominent leader defends the convention's sexual abuse response

Guidepost found that, rather than adopt prevention policies, a handful of leaders of the SBC’s executive committee sought to shield the denomination — and the hundreds of millions of dollars it collects in annual, untaxed donations — from lawsuits. The revelations sparked widespread soul-searching from many in the SBC, the nation’s second largest-faith group.
Among other responses to the investigation, leaders of Southern Baptist entities and seminaries said they will review institutional ties to former SBC President Johnny Hunt, who was accused in the report of sexually assaulting the wife of a pastor in 2010. Hunt has denied the accusations, but stepped down from the SBC’s North American evangelism entity ahead of the report.
Oldham, who resigned in 2019, said he had set up a “Google Alert” to find new webpages that included the terms “Baptist” and “arrested.” Over the years, Google automatically emailed Oldham links to news stories about cases of sexual abuse, which he forwarded to August “Augie” Boto, the executive committee’s top legal counsel.
The latest iteration of the table contained the name of 703 offenders, the report found, with 409 believed to be SBC-affiliated. Those scandals prompted the Chronicle’s 2019 investigation, Abuse of Faith, which found that hundreds of SBC pastors had sexually abused at least 700 people, most of them children, since 1998. The findings prompted the SBC to adopt changes that allow for the removal of churches employing sexual predators or that conceal or mishandle abuse reports.
