The outbreak is likely due in part to the increased politicization and hesitancy around vaccines, said Columbus Public Health Commissioner Dr. Mysheika Roberts. The growing outbreak should serve as a warning, Roberts said, of what could occur if parents don't get their children vaccinated for serious diseases like pertussis , hepatis and others.

"This is just one example of others that could come in the future if our parents continue to be reluctant and resistant to the typical childhood vaccines," Roberts said during a Tuesday media briefing with theAlthough preventable through vaccination, the measles is considered a dangerous and sometimes deadly disease. The measles outbreak began in day cares across the city before also spreading into schools. "I am concerned because people could be gathering in homes, I do anticipate the virus will continue to spread," Roberts said of the measles."I'm not optimistic. If anything, it's likely going to ramp up."
