Animated fish drawings swimming in Sketch Aquarium: Connected World at the Newark Museum of Art in Newark, N.J., February 1, 2023It’s one thing for kids’ artwork to hang on the walls of a museum. But it’s a completely different experience for their doodles to swim away — and to a museum on the other side of the globe.
Every ten minutes, the tuna designed by museum visitors in Newark gather into a group and swim to sister museums in Shanghai and Tokyo. The fish from Shanghai and Tokyo swim over to Newark for a lap through the aquarium before returning home. The exhibit has about ten templates that have predefined shapes including tuna fish, jellyfish, sharks and others.
“It’s incredible, it’s really cool technology,” said Luke Ricci, who came with family members and his two children. Sketch Aquarium is part of the Animal Kingdom exhibit space at the museum that includes other immersive and interactive spaces along with traditional exhibits. The birds from his book were animated. Some were made to fly around and the sounds of the birds and nature are played, bringing the surreal scene to life.
