For his new take, he changed the key and shook up the arrangement. The experiment was “quite a risk,” he said in the pre-taped segment. “It’s worth a try.”
It sure was, but the experiment was too much for the backing band. The 20-year-old’s audition wasn’t a homerun, so Gunn scrambled to scale back his performance, minus the band. He nailed it. “It feels pretty satisfying for me,” Gunn remarked afterwards. That’s understating it. Showcasing his versatility, the youngster's delivery moved judge Lionel Richie to tears.
