NASA's Artemis IV mission builds on Artemis III's lunar landing, establishing Gateway as a hub for scientific exploration.

Upon reaching lunar orbit, Gateway’s intricate systems will spring to life in anticipation of the arrival of additional elements, including the International Habitation module provided by the European Space Agency . I-Hab, featuring life support systems from the Japanese Space Agency , will expand Gateway’s capabilities by enabling prolonged stays.

Once the SLS rocket completes its initial launch and ascends, the core stage will detach from the upper stage, leaving it connected to both Orion and I-Hab. Following this, the upper stage will execute a translunar injection burn, propelling Orion and I-Hab toward the Moon. Once in lunar orbit, Orion will rotate 180 degrees to extract I-Hab, then dock with Gateway and help the crew move in with their cargo.
