“This is not an issue of intelligence or lack of education. This is not about who you know or who you’re connected to. Everyone is vulnerable to this,” said Cindy Van Keuran.
is currently working about one hundred different arrest scams but the latest is targeting medical professionals, and the sheriff’s department is getting several reports a day from local victims who are losing thousands of dollars, threatening to be arrested.
“So this scammer contacted my personal cell phone calling on the behalf of the judge to find out why I had not appeared in court,” she recalled.“It sounded very much like just telling me my options so that i could write this wrong of failing to appear in court and provide expert testimony. They’re including a you know, 350 page docket for me, all sorts of very detailed information,” she said.
Van Keuren isn’t surprised that medical professionals are being targeted, because she says scammers know they’ll go to great lengths to make sure their license to practice is protected. He says these sophisticated scammers are using real deputies’ names when they reach out to these medical professionals and even spoofing the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department phone number, all while pressing the victims to act quickly.
