You may be surprised to learn which models thieves most frequently target

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a motor vehicle was stolen in the U.S. during 2018 at the rate of once every 42.2 seconds. That amounts to 748,841 pilfered cars and trucks, with an aggregate value of $6.3 billion. On the plus side, the numbers reflect a 3.1 percent decrease in car thefts over 2017’s statistics. While 21 states and the District of Columbia experienced an increase in motor vehicle thefts, 29 states posted fewer vehicles driven off.

The most stolen car overall during 2018 was the Honda Civic, with examples from the 2000 model year accounting for the highest percentage of the model’s 38,426 thefts. Some thieves are particularly talented at being able to strip a vehicle of certain parts – airbags and catalytic converters are highly coveted in this regard – right where it’s parked. Police in Medford, Mass., just outside of Boston, recently reported a rash of airbag thefts, all from Honda Accords, which was the second most stolen model during 2018.
