Every year, Alaska recognizes Arbor Day on the third Monday of May, nearly a month after the rest of the U.S.
To commemorate the occasion this year, a tree-planting ceremony took place in front of Fairbanks City Hall in the early afternoon on Monday.
Four kids representing three Girl Scout troops helped dig a moat for the newly transplanted tree, taking the time to fill it with water to keep it hydrated. “Planting trees is really important for the environment so we can get enough oxygen and so it’s not as windy, and also plants have been scientifically proven to make people happier,” said Fiona Bowen, member of Girl Scout Troop 187.
The ceremonial tree this year is no stranger to surviving in peculiar conditions, having been brought down from the roof of the soon-to-be-demolished Polaris Building, where it took root along with several other trees.
