With massive projects — including the Gateway tunnel and the installation of offshore wind turbines — in the works, New Jersey officials are encouraging people to apply for new programs to learn trades.

Since Gov. Phil Murphy took office in January 2018, more than 500 new registered apprenticeship programs have been created, according to the state Department of Labor. But, there are other, less traditional industries, including healthcare and science, where employers also are taking advantage of apprenticeships, Asaro-Angelo said. There are opportunities for apprentices to work in nursing programs and in a physics lab at Princeton University.is also offering an apprenticeship program to provide hands-on training for people interested in the state’s legal weed industry.

“We’re just going to get hit on the head,” he said. “There’s going to be a tremendous amount of work out there and they’re going to need to keep up with it.”
