A new patent suggests that the next AirPods Pro could have a brave new functionality
, is unpromisingly titled “Interrupt for Noise-Cancelling Audio Devices”, but what’s at its heart is pretty cool.
The aim is that if your headphones are in noise-cancelling mode, you can still hear the world when you need to, for instance, when your significant other is trying to attract your attention. Their voice will be allowed through to your ears if they are a “pre-designated contact”, described as an “interrupt-authorized contact”.
Alternatively, the patent says that noise-cancelling could be interrupted by “a person who speaks a designated keyword to the user”. This could be handy if you set the keyword to “Chicken or beef?” when airborne, for instance, and really don’t want to miss your gourmet inflight meal.Or if the authorized contact is your significant other who’s sick of shouting and not getting a reply, with this advance, they’ll be able to be heard now.
