This week’s Apple headlines; exciting news on a new iPhone button, disappointing news on iPhone 15 pricing, Apple ruling refurbished phones, iPad support cut, Apple’s sneaky headset trick, geo-locking the sideloading of apps, and more...

Appel’s upcoming mixed reality headset is widely assumed to have an external battery pack, primarily to reduce the weight in the headset. There’s also a disappointing but expected detail around the cables… although USB-C will be present for data connectivity, it appears to have a proprietary connector for connecting to the headset:

"The battery will power the headset for approximately two hours, and it will be able to be swapped out for continuous usage while a second battery charges. Given the short battery life, the presumption is that Apple will offer additional battery packs for sale separately. Apple's headset is rumored to be called"Reality One" or"Reality Pro" and is expected to debut at WWDC in June, along with xrOS, Apple's new mixed-reality operating system.

"ShrimpApplePro says that USB-C MFi cables and a new version of EarPods are in mass production. Apple may release them ahead of the iPhone 15 lineup in the fall of 2023, along with a possible AirPods charging case with a USB-C port. Apple still sells wired EarPods headphones even though the wireless AirPods have been wildly successful. They're less expensive, don't require charging, and a new version will connect to a USB-C iPhone without an adapter.

“...the previous history here is that Apple has been coming under pressure from regulators in Europe over the issue of the App Store being perceived as a monopoly run by Apple… The EU's Digital Markets Act coming into force this summer aims to limit the control of digital"gatekeepers". The EU would argue that Apple can't force iOS apps to go through its own App Store, whereas Apple would say that it needs that control to keep users safe and to maintain a quality experience.
