Anthony Rizzo took a significant step back toward the Yankees on Friday night, potentially putting him in line to return by the first week of September.
Rizzo is expected to just DH for at least his first four rehab games — the plan is Friday, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday — before potentially getting action in the field next weekend.
Rizzo was not lighting the world on fire at the plate before getting hurt June 16 at Fenway Park — batting .223 with a .630 OPS in 70 games — but his experienced left-handed bat could help down the stretch. Since Rizzo went down, Yankees first basemen have combined for an OPS of .574, which was the second-lowest mark in the majors during that span.
The right-hander has been out since May 27, but is hoping to rejoin the Yankees rotation in September after posting a 2.52 ERA in 11 starts before getting hurt. Will Warren, called up as Gil’s injury replacement, will start Saturday’s game against the Rockies, giving Marcus Stroman an extra day of rest before he starts Sunday.
