The Edelman portrait includes a tribute to activists Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman, whose portraits are also in our collection. We are also debuting newer concepts,” saysdirector of the National Portrait Gallery. “We always say that ‘If you can’t see it, you can’t become it,’ and commissioning portraits provides us with the opportunity to ensure that the leaders of today—artists included—will inspire future generations.
Six of the works were newly commissioned and one never-before-seen photograph was acquired, in an unprecedented feat by the gallery, which in the past has used a mix of commissioned works, acquired works, and works already existing in their archive to honor individuals.
