Analysis: Why DeMeco Ryans makes a lot of sense for the Texans
on the circuit, including Sean Payton, Jonathan Gannon, Ben Johnson, Ejiro Evero, Shane Stiechen and Thomas Brown. All likely would be good hires.DeMeco Ryans.
But aside from the fact that he has the accolades, and has shown that he can lead one of the best units in football, he knows what it is to be a Houstonian. DeMeco Ryans, a team captain during his time in Houston, showed all the traits of a good leader, former coach Gary Kubiak says.“They can identify with him,” former Texans coach Gary Kubiak said of Houston fans. “It’s kind of like having one of your own on the sidelines. He fought for these fans for many years as a player. He knows what this city has been through.”
He had more than 100 tackles in each of his first four seasons before suffering an Achilles injury in 2010. Ryans later filed a lawsuit against the NFL, the Texans and NRG Stadium after a second Achilles injury he suffered during a 2014 Eagles-Texans game eventually ended his career. It’s unclear if the lawsuit will have an impact on any future hiring decision.
Kubiak said Ryans was a natural leader with the Texans who commanded his teammates’ attention. He admitted that whenever he’d get angry or frustrated and was yelling at his players, Ryans would walk over to him, put his arm around Kubiak and tell him, “Kub, I got this.”
