Candidate for New York State lieutenant governor Ana María Archila (AnaMariaforNY) wants to create a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented people in this country and codify RoeVWade into federal law immediately.

Ana María Archila, a lifelong organizer, became a national name when sheSenator Jeff Flake in a Capitol building elevator over his plans to confirm Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh despite Kavanaugh's record of alleged sexual assault. Archila, now a candidate for New York State lieutenant governor, talks to us about abolishing the filibuster and fighting for a more just society.

1. If you could snap your fingers and change two things about politics in the United States, what would they be?, a segregationist relic that has blocked progress on so many key issues and should be eliminated. Without the filibuster, Congress would have passed — and President Biden would have signed into law — the Build Back Better package, which included crucial measures to tackle climate change, create a pathway to citizenship, invest in a care economy, and more.

I’ve been organizing to pass humane immigration reform for 20 years, and we still have not won a path to citizenship. If I had a magic wand, I would immediately create a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented people in this country, and I would ensure that every level of government is taking urgent action on climate change.2.

While President Biden has been a dramatic improvement from the horrific and hateful president of Donald Trump, it’s been disappointing not to see more progress. Biden has been in office with control of the House and the Senate for two years, and yet we haven’t seen progress on key policy priorities, particularly those that were most important to the young people, Black and Latinx voters, and women who helped get him into that position.
