Lieb told the newspaper that studies dating back to 1906 likely never identified digger crayfish in the state because the areas where they lived were wetlands and swamps. The paper reported that many of those sites have since been drained or lost. Lieb said the state surveyed 673 square miles and 456 sites and found nine spots that had the crayfish. He told the paper that, while it is difficult to get a true estimate of population because of the way they burrow into the ground, he estimates there are less than 1,000 — maybe less than 500 — in the state.He said the “most visible sign” of the crayfish is a “chimney-like mound of dirt” around their burrows.“Any small events can wipe out the entire species from the state,” he said.
